The breath-taking performance of “The Impression of Liu Sanjie” tells a folk tale originating from the Zhuang ethnic minority. Set on the world’s largest natural theatre in Yangshuo, the show utilizes 7.5 miles (12 km) of the Li River and 12 mist-shrouded hills as its natural backdrop. The ever-changing mist, rain, and moonlight create a dreamlike scenery of unparalleled beauty. This innovative show is directed by Zhang Yiimou, the renowned director behind House of Flying Daggers (2004) and the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony.
The story, which was once turned into a movie, follows the life of a beautiful woman named Liu Sanjie, or literally “third sister Liu”, who was blessed with an angelic voice. “Impressions” uses a blend of both classical folk and modern songs performed by famous Chinese musicians. With a cast of 600 locals, the performance captures the harmonious relationship between nature and man, and explores the colorful culture of daily life surrounding the Li River.
