The Banpo Museum was built at the base of the excavation site of a Neolithic matriarchal community of the Yangshao Culture that lived 6000 years ago. Located in Shanxi, the museum exhibits cultural relics excavated from this site, including hunting tools, domestic artifacts, and pottery inscribed with ancient Chinese characters. Women were their primary labor force and were responsible for spinning, making pottery, and raising the family, while the men hunted and fished. Visitors can see the remains of numerous houses, stables, cellars, and kilns throughout the museum, as well as several reconstructed houses designed to resemble the Banpo community.
